Holy Orders

In Holy Orders men are ordained as priests, deacons, or bishops. Priests  serve as spiritual leaders of their communities, and deacons serve to  remind us of our baptismal call to help others. Bishops carry on the  teachings of the apostles. The signs of this sacrament are the laying on  of hands and anointing with oil by the bishop.

Through the sacrament of holy orders, or ordination , a man vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments,  especially the Eucharist . He promises to do this by proclaiming the  Gospel and by providing to Catholics other means to achieve holiness.

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love, impart Your knowledge,  understanding, and counsel to youth that they may know the vocation  wherein they can best serve God. Give them courage and strength to  follow God's holy will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their  resolutions, shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their  hearts, and lead them to the vineyards where they will labor in God's  holy service.
